Air Quality Alert issued October 4 at 9:42AM EDT by NWS Gray METhe Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of AirQuality has issued an Air Quality Alert for particle pollution untilmidnight EDT tonight.Particle pollution levels have already risen into the Unhealthy forSensitive Groups range this morning, Thursday Oct 3, 2024. This isdue to smoke from the fire in Orrington. Smoke is more likely to behighest near the facility and in the Penobscot River Valley but allnearby areas could also be impacted.The Maine Department of Environmental Protection recommends thatindividuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity toreduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may beespecially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutantsinclude the very young, the elderly, those with pre-existingrespiratory problems such as asthma, those with heart disease andanyone who is working hard outdoors. It is okay to be activeoutdoors. But if you experience symptoms such as shortness ofbreath, coughing, throat irritation or an uncomfortable sensation inyour chest please consider limiting the intensity and duration ofyour outdoor activities.A toll free air quality hotline has been established so Maineresidents can stay informed on the air quality situations.
