Heat Advisory issued June 17 at 1:33PM EDT until June 18 at 8:00PM EDT by NWS Northern Indiana* WHAT...Heat index values of 95 to 100 degrees expected.* WHERE...Portions of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.* WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT /7 PM CDT/ Tuesday.* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heatillnesses to occur.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...There is a chance that clouds linger froman overnight chance for showers and storms, which could limithow high heat indices get on Tuesday. However, should cloudsscatter out, heat indices could rapidly rise quickly. Heatstress increases with the number of consecutive hot days. Heatindices will range from 93 to near 100 for the next five days,with high temperatures in the upper 80s and low to mid 90s. Lowtemperatures in the 70s at night will provide little relief fromthe heat. Monitor for additional heat headlines this week.Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay outof the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Youngchildren and pets should never be left unattended in vehiclesunder any circumstances.Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Whenpossible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning orevening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing whenpossible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the OccupationalSafety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequentrest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyoneovercome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Air Quality Alert issued June 16 at 2:42PM EDT by NWS Northern IndianaThe Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy(EGLE) has declared an Air Quality Advisory for Monday, June 17, forelevated levels of ozone in parts of southwest Michigan. Pollutantswithin those areas are expected to be in the Unhealthy for SensitiveGroups (USG, Orange AQI) range.The Air Quality Advisory is in effect for the following counties insouthwest Michigan...Berrien and CassTemperatures and humidity will continue to increase as we begin thenew week. Temperatures in the 90's and dewpoints around 70 degreeswill add to the misery index for the week. This pattern looks topersist through the week. With winds at all levels of the atmospherecoming from the hot southwest, Air Quality will certainly be anissue, this week. With conditions not expected to change, drinkplenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of thesun as much as possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors.It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdooractivities, especially those with respiratory diseases such asasthma.People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead toozone formation.
